Donald Trump reportedly could reclassify marijuana
Based on a new report by Axios, Donald Trump is reclassifying marijuana four months after signing the executive order.
Announcing the decision on X (formerly Twitter), acting Attorney General Todd Blanche wrote, “Under the decisive leadership of @POTUS, this Department of Justice is delivering on his promise to improve American healthcare. This includes: Ordering a new, expedited hearing with set deadlines, to fully reschedule marijuana. Immediately rescheduling FDA-approved marijuana and state-licensed marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule IIl.”
He also asserted that this step is going to assist them to “enable more targeted, rigorous research into marijuana’s safety and efficacy.” Moreover, Blanche asserted that reclassifying marijuana will help patients have more “access to treatments and empowering doctors to make better-informed healthcare decisions.” Before, when marijuana was under Schedule I, it was put next to substances like heroin, synthetic opioids, MDMA, and more. However, with a shift to Schedule III, the drug now comes under the category of less dangerous substances like anabolic steroids, ketamine, and more.
Trump signed the order while surrounded by medical professionals in the Oval Office on December 18 last year. According to a report by The Guardian, at that time, he conveyed that he was very “pleased” with the fact that he was moving marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III, which would help doctors use it for “legitimate medical uses.” He further stated that his order will provide an easier path for medical researchers to conduct their research on the benefits of marijuana. Trump conveyed, “It’s going to have a tremendously positive impact.”
