John Kennedy criticizes Donald Trump’s feud with Pope Leo
Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana, a long-term supporter of Donald Trump and the ultraconservative MAGA movement, has spoken out against the President after Trump engaged in a “holy war” with the Pope over the US-Israel war against Iran.
“I love the president like a taco,” Kennedy said of Trump during a Fox News interview on Saturday (via The Guardian), “I don’t always agree with him, but I think he wants a better world. But I don’t agree with him about this new holy war with the pope.”
The term “taco” has been used by critics to refer to the phrase “Trump always chickens out.” Kennedy’s wording has drawn attention in that context.
Although Kennedy is a Methodist and not a Catholic, he said he has “great respect for Catholicism.” He also stated that the Pope “was entitled to his opinion.”
“Why do we want to have a fight with the pope?” Kennedy said. “It’s a distraction. And the press just sucks it up like a Hoover Deluxe [vacuum cleaner].”
Previously, the Pope responded to Trump’s comments about a “whole civilization” potentially dying, saying it was “truly unacceptable.”
Trump later posted on Truth Social, where he described the Pope as “WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.” The President added, “I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon.”
In a separate post, Trump shared an AI-generated image depicting himself as Jesus Christ, which was later deleted.
