A pet parrot named Bebe has gone viral after his owner took him snorkeling in the Bahamas using a homemade submarine. The custom submarine, which owner Steven Lawyer tested at home before using it in the sea, allows Bebe to explore underwater in a way that is unusual for parrots. The bird has also participated in other adventurous activities.
Bebe the parrot explores Bahamas in small submarine
Bebe, the parrot, has gone viral after his owner took him snorkeling in the Bahamas in a homemade submarine. Built from a food container, the parrot-sized submarine is equipped with two air fittings and a one-way valve. Air is supplied by a 3000 psi paintball cylinder strapped to the bottom of the submarine, and it has lead weights adjusted for optimal buoyancy.
Owner Steven Lawyer also installed an O2 meter in the submarine to ensure Bebe remained safe underwater with adequate oxygen levels.
“I wanted to be sure our beloved Bebe had plenty of fresh air,” Lawyer said about the submarine (via Dexerto). Before snorkeling in the Bahamas, Lawyer tested the submarine with Bebe in a bathtub. Even in the sea, they did not take risks with Bebe. “The coral where we snorkeled is in a sheltered harbor that we know well with no rip currents,” he explained. “So we knew there was no risk of him getting whisked away.”
Interestingly, this is not the first unusual activity Bebe has participated in. The parrot is known for taking part in various activities with its owner. “Bebe loves to go everywhere with us and join us in all activities,” Lawyer said. “He goes on a 500 mile, 20,000 participant, week-long bicycle ride with us every year, where he has become a celebrity of sorts.”
Bebe’s most challenging activity, however, has been skydiving. The parrot has participated in 15 jumps since last fall. Reports state that Bebe voluntarily hops into a plastic bubble strapped to Lawyer’s belly for the freefall.
