Pixar To Develop 1st Ever Musical Film Soon & More — Report

Pixar is reportedly continuing to invest in new original stories after the box office performance of Hoppers. A recent report indicates that the studio is developing multiple upcoming projects as it works to expand its lineup of original animated films.

Pixar reportedly working on two original films

Following the recent box office performance of Hoppers, Pixar is reportedly moving ahead with several new original projects. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the animation studio is developing multiple new concepts as it continues to expand its slate of original stories alongside its established franchises.

One of the projects highlighted by the report is titled Ono Ghost Market. It draws inspiration from Asian folklore about supernatural marketplaces where the worlds of the living and the dead intersect. The concept was initially planned as a streaming series but is now being developed as a feature film. Pixar has not yet publicly introduced the project.

The report also notes that the studio is working on its first musical feature. The project is said to be directed by Domee Shi, who previously directed Turning Red. Specific plot details have not been revealed. Nevertheless, the film is expected to mark a new creative direction for the studio.

The report comes after the theatrical debut of Hoppers, which opened strongly in North America. According to Variety, the film earned approximately $46 million during its opening weekend from about 4,000 theaters across the United States and Canada. International markets contributed an additional $42 million, bringing the film’s global opening total to $88 million.

Directed by Daniel Chong and written by Jesse Andrews, Hoppers premiered in the United States on March 6. The story centers on a 19-year-old animal lover named Mabel Tanaka who uses experimental technology that places her consciousness inside a robotic beaver. This allows her to communicate with animals while trying to protect their habitat.
