California Governor Gavin Newsom has detailed a conversation he had with Donald Trump in June of last year, wherein the President appeared to tease him about a childish nickname. He recalled that he had contacted Trump the night before the latter sent National Guard troops into Los Angeles. In the call, Trump asked Newsom about his opinion regarding his nickname, “Newscum,” before switching to other topics.
Gavin Newsom recalls old Donald Trump phone call
During a recent conversation, the former Mayor of San Francisco opened up about the last time he conversed with the POTUS on the phone.
“It was about 10.30 my time, 1.30 his time,” Gavin Newsom revealed during the March 3 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. “And he goes: ‘Hey, Gav, Gav, what do you think of Newscum?’ It’s his nickname for me. I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ He goes, ‘It’s pretty original, right?'” prompting him to reply, “‘Actually, it’s not. There was an eighth-grade bully that did that when I was a kid.'”
Donald Trump quickly switched the topic, relaying to Newsom that “MAGA’s pretty good.” He then bizarrely questioned the veteran Democrat about the number of MAGA hats he had sold in the previous week, claiming the number was 211.
“These are the conversations with Trump. You can’t make this stuff up,” Newsom reacted in a baffled tone. He further revealed that “about 12 hours later, he said that he had read me the riot act and moved forward with the federalization of the guard.”
Gavin Newsom then opened up yet another phone call he had with the businessman-turned-politician following his inaugural address. During the speech, Newsom’s youngest son had inadvertently stumbled upon the stage and fallen asleep.
“Trump calls me the next day and said, ‘I saw that.’ I said, ‘Thank you, Mr. President,'” the California Governor noted. “I thought it was going to be a positive conversation. And, he talks about my wife, said something interesting about her.”
“‘Melania’s upset,'” Donald Trump said, as per Newsom. “‘You said some pretty harsh things about me.'” When he tried to explain his address, the President replied, “‘Oh, I get it, oh, we’re all good.'” Per Newsom, it looked like “he was hurt, he was so sad.”
