Harry Styles on Impact of Liam Payne’s Death: ‘It’s Difficult’

Harry Styles has opened up about how the death of his former bandmate Liam Payne affected him personally. Speaking during promotion for his new album Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally., the singer reflected on grief, friendship and the pressure of dealing with loss in public. Styles said Payne’s passing forced him to rethink how he wants to live his life moving forward.

Styles discussed the loss during a conversation with Zane Lowe on Apple Music. The “Watermelon Sugar” singer admitted he struggled in the period after Payne died in October 2024.

One of the hardest parts, he said, was dealing with grief while knowing the public expected him to express it openly. “I struggle with that a little bit, even,” Styles said. “I think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled with kind of like acknowledging how strange it is to have people kind of like own part of your grief in a way.”

Styles explained that losing Payne felt deeply personal because of how similar they were. Both rose to global fame through the boy band One Direction and spent years navigating sudden celebrity together. The shared experience created a strong bond between them.

“It’s so difficult to lose a friend,” Styles said. “It’s difficult to lose any friend, but it’s so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways.” He added that Payne had “the kindest heart” and always wanted to do great things.

The loss also pushed Styles to reflect on his own priorities. He said Payne’s death became an important moment of self-examination. “It was a really important moment for me in terms of taking a look at my life and being able to say to myself, ‘OK, what do I want to do with my life? How do I want to live my life?’” Styles said. He added that the best way to honor friends who pass away is “by living your life to the fullest.”
