The recently released first episode of Marshals, the latest Yellowstone spin-off, has garnered a positive reception, but series lead Luke Grimes wasn’t always convinced about returning. Grimes portrays Kayce Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s fan-favorite neo-Western franchise. He revealed in a recent interview that the concept of Marshals initially felt like a “terrible” idea to him.
Luke Grimes says it took him ‘a while’ to accept Marshals role
Luke Grimes has admitted that he wasn’t very excited when he first learned about the third Yellowstone spin-off.
“Once I heard the pitch for what Marshals was going to be… When I first heard the idea, it was just, ‘How about a Kayce Dutton procedural?'” he told Parade. “That sounded really terrible, to be honest. I thought that was a crazy idea.”
He then added, “At the time, because I was filming the last episode [of Yellowstone] and I really liked the last episode and how it ended, I didn’t know if this is something that I should do or not right off the bat. It took a while before I really started getting fired up about it and realized that it was the right call.”
However, Grimes ultimately came around. This happened when Marshals showrunner Spencer Hudnut assured him that the spin-off would be like “no procedural you’ve seen before.” The 42-year-old actor and musician then detailed the aspect of the show that convinced him.
“There’s storylines that go over multiple episodes, and we’ll go over multiple seasons… And it’s not just a straight-up procedural in the sense that we’re used to. But the way that we use that is sort of a great device for all these combat missions that we go on… So that you do get a bit of a payoff at the end of each episode,” he stated.
Marshals, featuring Grimes, Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, and Tatanka Means, among others, in the leading roles, centers around Kayce as he enlists in an elite US Marshals task force. They are commissioned to protect the state of Montana.
