Luke Grimes has shared an unexpected update about his relationship with Kevin Costner after Yellowstone. Despite playing father and son for years, the former costars have not stayed in touch since their time together ended. However, the Kayce Dutton actor made one thing clear. He does not blame a feud or bad blood for the distance between them.

During a new USA Today interview, Luke Grimes revealed that he has not spoken to Kevin Costner since they stopped working together.
“I have never spoken to Kevin since we stopped working together,” Grimes said. However, he quickly explained that nothing dramatic caused the silence. Instead, he said they are both busy and “life moves on.”
The simple explanation comes after years of attention surrounding Costner’s departure from Yellowstone. He played John Dutton, the powerful ranch patriarch and father of Grimes’ Kayce Dutton.
Costner ultimately left before the second half of the show’s fifth and final season. He confirmed his departure in 2024, and Yellowstone later killed off John Dutton.
Meanwhile, Grimes has continued Kayce’s story beyond the original series. He now leads Marshals, which follows Kayce after he leaves the Yellowstone Ranch and joins a U.S. Marshals unit in Montana.
Marshals Season 2 returned on Oct. 4, bringing Grimes back as Kayce. The spinoff also maintains several connections to the wider Yellowstone universe.
Still, Grimes has not completely ruled out seeing Costner’s John again. He said it “would be cool” if the actor appeared in Marshals, although he doubts that will happen.
Because John died in Yellowstone, any return would likely involve a flashback. However, Grimes admitted another reunion would mean more to Kayce’s current story.
He would rather reunite with Kelsey Asbille as Kayce’s late wife, Monica. According to Grimes, that kind of flashback could feel more poignant for the character.
For now, Grimes’ update removes one obvious assumption about his silence with Costner. They may no longer speak, but Grimes says their busy lives, not lingering animosity, explain the distance.
