Katherine Hartley Short, the daughter of Martin Short, has passed away. She was 42 years old. “It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world,” the Short family told People in a statement.

According to reports, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call from a Hollywood Hills residence at 6:41 p.m. on February 23, regarding a female. The Los Angeles County coroner later confirmed to the outlet that Katherine died by suicide.

While Katherine largely stayed out of the limelight, she devoted her professional life to something far more meaningful: helping those struggling with their mental health. She worked as a licensed clinical social worker in private practice and contributed her expertise part-time at Amae Health. There, she provided community outreach, family support groups, peer support, and psychotherapy.

Her educational path reflected this deep commitment to understanding and healing. Katherine earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and gender sexuality studies from New York University in 200. This was followed by a master’s in social work from the University of Southern California in 2010.

Katherine joined the Short family through adoption, welcomed by Martin and his wife of three decades, Nancy Dolman. Nancy passed away from ovarian cancer in 2010. The family also includes Katherine’s brothers, Oliver Patrick, 39, and Henry Hayter, 36.
