Matthew Vaughn’s Layer Cake went on to become a cult classic following its release in the United States in May 2005. Moreover, Hardy and Craig went on to receive high praise from critics for their performances. Its synopsis on Apple TV+ reads, “An unnamed mid-level cocaine dealer (Craig) in London makes plans to step away from the criminal life. Before he can cut ties, the dealer’s supplier Jimmy Price (Cranham) draws him into a complicated pair of jobs leading to a series of elaborate double-crosses from all corners.”
On Rotten Tomatoes, Layer Cake was lauded for its story and attained a score of 81 percent on the Tomatometer based on critic reviews. It also holds a high score of 84 percent on the Popcornmeter based on audience reviews.
Vaughn had a chat with GQ on the 20th anniversary of the movie in October 2024 and stated, “Everyone said it’s the 20th anniversary, and I was like, ‘Oh no, where did all the time go?’ I’ve never watched it since I finished it. Every now and then, I see it on TV, and I watch scenes, and it just brings back fond memories.” He also spoke about how the stars of that movie are now big names in Hollywood and noted, “I am very proud of my track record, now, of taking people that weren’t known, and seeing them become megastars. I had fantastic casting directors as well, let’s be clear — they were brilliant, and I’m very grateful to them.”
