Matthew McConaughey Warns AI Will ‘Infiltrate’ the Oscars

Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey is sounding the alarm about artificial intelligence’s growing role in Hollywood. Speaking alongside Timothée Chalamet, the actor warned that AI-generated performances could soon reshape awards season, and possibly even compete with human actors.

During a Variety and CNN town hall at the University of Texas at Austin, McConaughey made it clear he believes AI’s impact on acting is inevitable. “It’s coming. It’s already here,” he said when asked about the technology’s rapid rise. The actor urged performers to protect their identities, adding that artists should trademark their voice and likeness so “no one can steal you.”

McConaughey even floated the possibility that AI performances could enter the awards race. “It’s damn sure going to infiltrate our category,” he said, questioning whether the Academy might one day introduce honors like “best AI film” or “best AI actor.” He warned that the tech will soon become so advanced that audiences may struggle to tell what’s real. “Prep for it,” McConaughey warned.

Chalamet agreed the shift is unavoidable but emphasized that younger generations will have to figure out how to live with it responsibly. He told students the challenge will be a “dual responsibility,” with Gen Z likely leading the way while established figures like himself and Matthew help safeguard opportunities for real performers.

The discussion also touched on industry tensions during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA negotiations. Chalamet noted the union, led by Fran Drescher, pushed for stronger AI protections but faced a tough fight. He compared resistance to AI with past technological shifts like the move from silent films to sound.

Ultimately, both stars struck a cautious tone. McConaughey called the future both “exciting” and “scary,” urging creatives to “own your own lane” before AI crosses further into their side. Chalamet shared the same belief, saying the technology is coming regardless, and the industry must learn how to handle it wisely.
