A new rumor surfaced, suggesting that Tom Cruise was working on Mission: Impossible 9. It also suggests that he reportedly sought out Oscar-winning writer-director Chloe Zhao to helm it. Despite the iconic franchise’s enduring popularity, fans haven’t reacted to this rumor with excitement. Notably, a ninth installment hasn’t been officially confirmed.
Fans react to Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible 9 rumor
DeuxMoi, an Instagram account known for celebrity gossip, recently shared an email with a rumor that they said was “submitted anonymously” and couldn’t be “verified.” It said that Chloe Zhao, fresh off directing the Oscar-nominated historical drama, Hamnet, was reportedly in negotiations to write and helm Mission: Impossible 9. It further stated that Tom Cruise met Zhao and “workshopped a treatment” with her, with the writing process now underway.
Although this is an unverified rumor, fans aren’t entertaining the idea of a ninth outing for Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. They have shared their surprise and disapproval online.
Before this rumor surfaced, many believed Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning to be the last hurrah for Cruise’s fan-favorite protagonist. The four-time Oscar nominee himself said that the eighth film would be the last, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s the final! It’s not called ‘final’ for nothing.”
Interestingly, before this, Cruise expressed interest in making more Mission: Impossible films. Speaking to The Sydney Morning Herald at the Australian premiere of Dead Reckoning Part One, he expressed hope of matching the longevity of fellow Hollywood veteran Harrison Ford, who at 80 starred in 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
“Harrison Ford is a legend; I hope to be still going,” the Jerry Maguire star shared. “I’ve got 20 years to catch up with him. I hope to keep making Mission: Impossible films until I’m his age,” he added.
Sometime after this, Jeff Sneider reported that Cruise wanted his Top Gun: Maverick co-star Glen Powell to lead future Mission: Impossible films. However, Powell debunked the rumor in an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. He said, “My mom would never let me do that. Worst gig in town, everybody knows that. That’s a death trap.”
