Dax Shepard talks about his near-death incident
Dax Shepard recently shared his harrowing tale of a brush with mortality on his Armchair Expert podcast.
The 51-year-old actor revisited the traumatic episode with unflinching honesty, sharing the chilling details with Kaley Cuoco on the latest episode of Armchair Expert.
“I don’t know what the definition is,” he told the Big Bang Theory star. “But I have had the moment — which is among the most unique feelings I’ve ever had in my entire life — where I went, ‘Oh, I’m about to die. I’m like, seconds away from dying,’” Shepard added.
The accident took place while Dax Shepard was resting in the backseat of a friend’s car. They were heading back to Detroit from Toledo late at night. He had decided to take a nap, trusting his friend to get them home safely. However, the sound of gravel hitting the car jolted him awake, and he saw his friend slumped over the wheel.
The car, traveling at 85mph, had gone off the road and was careening out of control. Shepard quickly assessed the situation and knew that grabbing the wheel wouldn’t work. He chose to lie back down and prepare for impact.
The car launched into the air, rolling down the highway, with the Idiocracy actor waiting to hit a tree. In that moment, he felt a profound realization that he was about to die. Shepard believes his brain released chemicals that calmed him down, saying, “And then I just went, ‘Oh.’ And I got very calm.”
Surprisingly, Shepard and his friend walked away without injuries, despite the gravity of the situation.
The incident, however, has made a lasting impact on Shepard’s outlook on life. Additionally, the accident left him with a newfound aversion to sleeping in cars.
