One of the General Hospital‘s main cast members is taking a break from the ABC soap opera, but only temporarily. The Daytime Emmy winner confirmed recently that he is taking a short hiatus, reassuring fans that he plans to return soon.
Steve Burton to take a break from General Hospital
The news came directly from the actor himself via social media on February 10. Steve Burton shared with his followers that he will be taking a brief break from ABC’s General Hospital.
“Hey everyone, I wanted to share that I’ll be taking a short break from General Hospital,” he wrote on Instagram. “I’m newly married and looking forward to spending some quality time with my family. I’m grateful for all the support and will be back this summer. Much love.”
This personal decision follows Burton’s marriage to chef and content creator Michelle Lundstrom on May 17, 2025. His final episode has already been filmed, with his last day on set happening on February 6. However, due to the show’s production schedule, which tapes several weeks in advance, viewers will continue to see Burton on screen for some time before his character’s absence is written into the storyline.
The show’s executive producer, Frank Valentini, has expressed full support for Burton’s decision. Valentini said, “We love Steve and I am glad the show worked it out so he can get some personal time with his family. We have some great Jason story leading up to spring and look forward to his return in the summer (via Soap Opera Digest).”
This is not the first time Steve Burton, aka Jason, has stepped away from Port Charles. Burton debuted as Jason Morgan in 1991 in General Hospital and has taken multiple breaks over the decades. He first exited in 2000, returned intermittently, and came back full-time in 2002. In 2012, he left again. He later joined The Young and the Restless before returning in 2017. After another break in 2021, Burton officially came back to General Hospital in March 2024 following a primetime anniversary special.
