Taylor Swift Faces Backlash Over Opalite Video’s Limited Release

Taylor Swift enthralled fans by releasing the much-awaited “Opalite” music video on major streaming platforms. “Opalite” is listed as the third track on her album “The Life of a Showgirl”, and hence, it comes as no surprise that it is getting a music video after “The Fate of Ophelia”. However, a certain section of fans has slammed Swift over the “Opalite” music video releasing on Spotify and Apple Music.

Taylor Swift criticized for Opalite video release

A certain section of fans called out Taylor Swift for releasing the “Opalite” music video on paid streaming sites like Apple Music and Spotify. For those unversed, “Opalite” is the second most-streamed track from the record on Spotify. The earworm song has garnered more than half a billion listens on Spotify since October 2025 (via Gold Derby).

Swift’s team announced she would be releasing the official music video on Apple Music and Spotify Premium on Friday, February 6, and then releasing it on YouTube on February 8. Fans believed it was to ensure that the pop star was simply boosting “Opalite’s” chances of charting better through paid streaming apps and ranking on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Billboard does not take YouTube views into consideration anymore. Hence, Swift released it on Apple Music and Spotify Premium first to boost her chances of charting on Billboard’s Hot 100 in the first two days of its release. After that, she released it on YouTube to make it accessible to the general public.

However, a certain section of fans has slammed this move. Swift is known for going out of her way to generously deliver more than promised or intended. But this time, fans believe the pop star put forth her personal success over accessibility to fans.

These fans criticized her actions on X. One fan wrote, “These kinds of actions are what prove that Taylor Swift only cares about the charts.” A second fan commented, “This isn’t funny. I don’t have music videos on my Spotify,” accompanied by a crying emoji.

A third fan shared, “Chart obsessed like her fans.” Another fan penned, “Taylor Swift is such a… Releasing the music video on Spotify and Apple Music instead of YouTube, all because she wants the number 1 song, is so greedy.”
