Kristen Stewart on why she wants to make movies outside the US

In a recent interview with The Times, Kristen Stewart spoke about whether she had plans to work in the United States.

When asked if she had long-term plans to work in the States, Stewart responded with, “Probably not.” She went on to explain, “I can’t work freely there,” and added, “But I don’t want to give up completely. I’d like to make movies in Europe and then shove them down the throat of the American people.”

She shot her feature directorial debut with The Chronology of Water, which she shot in Latvia. She claimed that “it would have been impossible to do in the States.” She also referred to President Donald Trump’s plans of imposing tariffs on the film industry.

Citing concerns about the present administration, Stewart said, “Reality is breaking completely under Trump. But we should take a page out of his book and create the reality we want to live in.”

For the actress, this means continuing to make movies in the future. “It’s how I relate to the world,” she said, “I’m always going, ‘How are we going to make that into a movie?”

After directing music videos and the short film Come Swim (2017), Stewart made her feature directorial debut in 2025. The Chronology of Water, which starred Imogen Poots as Linda Yuknavitch, received universal critical acclaim.

The film had a limited theatrical release on January 9, 2026.
