Benedict Cumberbatch’s Avengers: Doomsday Role Isn’t the Hero We Know – Report

A familiar internet scooper shared the cast list of Avengers: Doomsday pre-reshoots, which includes Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch in a rather surprising role. It is currently unclear if the English actor, who was absent from the initial livestream cast reveal, will be showing up in the event film. Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme was last seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where he, Wong, and America Chavez fought Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch.

Benedict Cumberbatch could be playing a variant in Avengers: Doomsday

The Sherlock star will supposedly essay a variant of the Doctor Strange fans know and love in Avengers: Doomsday, as per a new rumored updated cast list.

Renowned internet scooper MyTimetoShineHello recently shared an updated cast list of actors expected for the film’s reshoots. These include the confirmed actors as well as several unconfirmed ones. As suggested by the list, Cumberbatch is playing “Doom’s wizard sidekick.”

Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed Benedict Cumberbatch’s involvement in Avengers: Doomsday. However, the actor has offered conflicting statements about the same.

In a cover story for Variety in January 2025, The Imitation Game actor told the outlet that the magic-wielding superhero would sit out of Doomsday, noting that it boiled down to “the character not aligning with this part of the story.”

However, Cumberbatch claimed that Strange would have a major role in the sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The 49-year-old added, “He’s quite central to where things might go.” In addition, he teased that the character would appear in a third solo film.

Later, the two-time Oscar nominee backtracked on his comments. While speaking with Business Insider at the Sundance Film Festival premiere of his film, The Thing With Feathers, Cumberbatch, after being asked if Marvel sent him a sternly worded e-mail regarding his comments in the Variety interview, stated, “I got that wrong, I am in the next one.” He added while smirking, “Don’t ever believe anything I say.”

Meanwhile, Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026. Anthony and Joe Russo helmed the film from Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely’s screenplay.
