High School Musical’s Ashley Tisdale & Lucas Grabeel Had a Rocky Start

High School Musical stars Lucas Grabeel and Ashley Tisdale, both of whom have remained pop culture sensations over the years, did not get along well at the very start. However, as they got to know each other, things changed drastically to the point that Grabeel refers to her as a sibling now.

Lucas Grabeel and Ashley Tisdale didn’t see eye to eye on High School Musical set at first

In a recent interview with Buzzfeed, Lucas Grabeel spoke about a variety of things about High School Musical, including how he came to audition for Troy Bolton initially, but ended up getting the role of Ryan Evans.

In the interview, the actor also opened up about his bond with his fellow co-star, Ashley Tisdale. “Ashley is the reason I got the job. It started in the audition at that final callback, and the two of us were paired up. Ashley just immediately embodied Sharpay, and I didn’t even realize how quickly that made me settle into Ryan,” he said.

“We ran the scene, and she immediately gave me notes and told me how to say certain lines. At the time, I was thinking, ‘Who do you think you are?’ But I walked into the audition with that ‘Ryan’ vibe of just doing your best and keeping cool. So that Ryan/Sharpay energy happened immediately, and that’s what you see in the movie.”

He went on to elaborate on their rather complex dynamic at the start. “We didn’t get along great in the beginning, and that’s well known; we’ve talked about it. But once I really got to know Ashley, and I got to know her family and her story, and she learned mine — we became like siblings, and I really love her,” he elaborated, and added, “Casting was so important with High School Musical, and we had a very sibling-like relationship, just like Ryan and Sharpay. Looking back, I understand why they chose us for the roles. So thanks, Ash!”

High School Musical remains one of the most popular film series of all time.
