Ashley Tisdale Wanted a Divorce ‘So Many Times’ After First Child

Ashley Tisdale opened up about how her marriage was affected after the birth of her first child. She revealed that she tried to divorce her husband multiple times while experiencing postpartum depression. While she felt equipped to handle her anxiety before becoming a mother, the hormonal changes made the experience more difficult than she had anticipated.

Appearing on her husband Christopher French’s mental health podcast Recovering with Christopher French, Tisdale discussed how her mental health struggles affected her. Speaking to him on the podcast, she recalled how overwhelming her emotions could get.

Tisdale said, “Obviously you dealt with a lot of that and we had difficulty, you know, during that first year. I tried to divorce you so many times, but you’re so grounded and calm and knew to just let it blow over.”

The misdiagnosis that left Ashley Tisdale searching for answers

Despite how much postpartum depression affected her marriage after the birth of her first child, she revealed that her doctors initially diagnosed her with PMDD instead. The diagnosis left her confused and concerned about what her life would look like. Her postpartum depression was not initially identified. She struggled to understand why her symptoms persisted.

The High School Musical revealed that she was initially diagnosed with premenstrual dysphoric disorder instead. PMDD can cause severe symptoms during the week or two before menstruation.. Tisdale remembered being horrified, thinking she might have to ‘live with this for the rest of my life “live with this for the rest of [her] life.” She also recalled being told that there was nothing that could be done for the disorder.

The Suite Life of Zack & Cody star reported being unsure of what to do and described her moods as “horrible.” She finally received an explanation around her daughter’s second birthday. She did not experience the same symptoms after the birth of her second child.
