‘It’s a Losing Enterprise’: Glen Powell on Being Called ‘The Next Tom Cruise’

Glen Powell responded to the growing buzz about fans calling him “the next Tom Cruise.” While Powell has become a household name thanks to the projects he chooses, the 37-year-old believes trying to replicate Cruise’s success is a “losing enterprise.”

Glen Powell says ‘there’s only one Tom Cruise’

On the 83rd Golden Globe Awards’ red carpet, Glen Powell was asked how he feels about people calling him “the next Tom Cruise.” The actor replied, “I mean, there is only one Tom Cruise,” adding, “Anyone who tries to recreate those footsteps… It’s a losing enterprise.”

He continued, “But I will say this: to have Tom as a friend, as a mentor, as a guy who’s really in every single phase of this business, which can be pretty disorienting and loud… For the busiest guy in Hollywood, he’s the most present guy who always shows up. I’m very, very grateful to call him a friend.”

Praise for the actor follows the success of his latest movie, The Running Man. Glen Powell claimed to have performed most of his own stunts, including jumping off a bridge and rappelling down a building. However, that’s not the only action movie he has worked on. Before that, he also led other action projects, such as Hit Man and Twisters.

Powell began his acting career as a kid in 2003, appearing in small roles in movies such as Spy Kids 3: Game Over. He later appeared in The Dark Knight Rises, The Expendables 3, Scream Queens, and Set It Up. However, his breakthrough role came in 2022. That year, he portrayed Lt. Jake “Hangman” Seresin in Top Gun: Maverick, starring alongside Tom Cruise.

Since then, Powell has led several projects, including Anyone But You and the Hulu comedy series Chad Powers. He was recently nominated for the Golden Globes for Chad Power under the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy category.
