OpenAI Updates ChatGPT to Better Handle Your Health Queries

Renowned artificial intelligence research organization OpenAI has now taken its first step into the medical industry by launching ChatGPT Health. An extension of the existing ChatGPT service, the Health update aims to combine the chatbot’s AI with users’ health records in order to provide them with a more refined understanding of their condition.

OpenAI introduces new ChatGPT Health

OpenAI has successfully rolled out ChatGPT Health, which enables users to manage their health in a more efficient manner. By feeding the extension with medical records and data from wellness apps, people can now extract a personalized assessment of their condition rather than relying on ChatGPT’s more generic replies.

The ChatGPT Health update comes after OpenAI revealed that over 230 million people submit health-related queries globally every other week. Although the Health patch is an intrinsic part of ChatGPT, OpenAI has allocated a private space for the extension. This is to prevent data from Health conversations from flowing back to regular chats.

Moreover, OpenAI does not leverage information from Health to train its foundation models. Users can disconnect wellness apps from the service and delete added records. They can even enable multi-factor authentication to enhance security at any time. Health apps that are compatible with the ChatGPT patch include Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal.

OpenAI has also claimed that it does not intend ChatGPT Health to replace medical care. Instead, it aims to act as a support system for the on-ground professionals. Additionally, the company has developed the Health extension after consulting with more than 260 doctors across 60 countries over two years, spanning in excess of 600,000 evaluations.

HealthBench, an assessment framework developed in collaboration with a host of physicians, helps evaluate the model powering ChatGPT Health. It makes use of several criteria, including safety and clinical quality, to enable Health to efficiently conduct all sorts of intricate medical assessments.

At the time of writing, OpenAI has planned a limited launch for Health in regions outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK. It is for a select group of users with Free, Go, Plus, and Pro ChatGPT plans. However, the company expects to cover more destinations throughout 2026.
