Neon has released the official trailer for Andrew Garfield’s next film, Artificial, which is about the OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The drama comes from Luca Guadagnino, known for helming Challengers, Queer, and other celebrated films.
Artificial will follow Altman’s life before and after his firing from OpenAI in 2023. The long film has been described as “a drama of immense moral urgency.” The trailer doesn’t reveal much, showing brief glimpses of Garfield as Altman, followed by a montage of intense sequences.
The voiceover in the trailer hints at the global and political importance of ChatGPT ahead of its public launch. Most importantly, the trailer confirms that Artificial will be released in select theaters on Christmas Day this year.

What to know about Andrew Garfield’s Sam Altman movie
Prior to being acquired by Neon, the film went through multiple roadblocks on its way to release. It was originally going to be distributed by Amazon MGM Studios but was dropped by the company for an undisclosed reason. Besides exploring OpenAI, the film reportedly compares Elon Musk to a dictator.
Apart from Garfield, Artificial’s cast includes Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, Mark Rylance, Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Billie Lourd, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Koch, and Cooper Hoffman. Barbaro plays former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, while Borisov plays former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. The movie is directed by Luca Guadagnino from a screenplay by Simon Rich.
This marks Garfield’s second major tech-biopic role following his portrayal of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin in 2011’s The Social Network. The actor’s latest feature, The Uprising, is currently in theaters.
Artificial will have its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival on October 5, 2026, before arriving in select theaters on December 25, 2026, ahead of a wider January expansion.
