Why Jon Bernthal’s New Netflix Murder Mystery Is a Must Watch

His & Hers, the new Netflix murder mystery series, has debuted with an impressive 82% score on the Tomatometer and a wave of positive reviews praising its performances, twists, and binge-worthy appeal. Starring Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal, the show premiered on January 8, 2026.

His & Hers gets great reviews and Rotten Tomatoes score

Critics have largely responded positively to the show’s tone and ambition. Writing for The Guardian, Lucy Mangan said, “The twists, they are plentiful. The absurdities, they multiply. The viewerly enjoyment, it increases. The script — intoxicating mercenariness aside — is serviceable. The endeavour is bingeable. Nobody needs more, this early in the year.”

Aramide Tinubu of Variety described the series as, “A delectable, detailed story spotlighting revenge, women’s rage and deceit, His & Hers seeps into your psyche, shifting everything you thought you knew.” IGN Movies critic Michael Peyton highlighted the leads, writing, “Bolstered by crackling chemistry between series leads Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal, His & Hers starts off as a typical murder mystery but eventually evolves into an examination of grief, marriage, and parenthood.”

From The Wall Street Journal, John Anderson noted, “Ms. Thompson, an arresting presence at all times, is pure emotional stealth. Mr. Bernthal can treat a tender moment as the opportunity to be overwrought. As twin stars of a crime drama, they’re in different orbits but convincing.”

Set in the quiet town of Dahlonega in north Georgia, Netflix’s murder mystery series explores what happens when buried secrets resurface in a place where everyone knows each other. The series follows journalist Anna Andrews, played by Thompson, who returns home after learning that her former high school friend Rachel has been found dead.

Anna’s return quickly becomes complicated. Her estranged husband, Detective Jack Harper, played by Bernthal, is leading the murder investigation. As Anna and Jack circle the same case from different sides, suspicion grows—not just between them, but around several people from their shared past, including former classmates Zoe and Helen. The series steadily builds tension by weaving personal history into the present-day crime.
