Wicked 2 Star Won’t Be at Golden Globes Due to Dracula Project

The star of Wicked: For Good won’t be at the 83rd Golden Globes, even though she earned a leading actress nomination. Cynthia Erivo is caught up in rehearsals for London’s highly anticipated West End production of Dracula. Erivo takes on 23 roles, including the vampire himself. Her packed schedule in London keeps her from flying to Los Angeles for the awards show.

Cynthia Erivo won’t attend Golden Globes because of the schedule of her West End production

Cynthia Erivo is deep in preparation for Dracula, a West End show directed by Kip Williams. Previews for it start on February 4 in London. The demanding production has her juggling multiple roles in the Gothic horror story. This leaves zero wiggle room to travel for the Golden Globes. Producers confirmed her West End commitment makes attending the LA ceremony impossible.

This marks Erivo’s fifth Golden Globe nomination. She’s previously been nominated for Harriet, Genius: Aretha, and the original Wicked film. With this nod, she became the first Black woman to earn two lead actress nominations in the comedy or musical category. “I hope there are many more to come, not just for me, but for other Black women,” she told Variety. “I hope it’s just the beginning.”

Wicked: For Good is dominating the Golden Globe buzz with five nominations. The list includes the Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande, and two nods for Best Original Song. The film has already raked in over $500 million worldwide, proving it’s a hit with both fans and critics.

Building on the success of the first Wicked movie, which scored 10 Oscar nominations, this sequel cements the franchise’s powerhouse status. For Erivo, the nomination brings her a step closer to her EGOT status. This is held by someone who has won all four major American entertainment awards: an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. This highlights her influence in the entertainment world is only growing.
