‘Cliché Lesbian’: Adolescence Star Shares Major Relationship Update

Adolescence star Erin Doherty recently gave a relationship update during an appearance on Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast. She called herself a “romantic” and detailed moving in with NHS radiographer Sinead Donnelly, after dating for a few months. She also called her move a “cliché.”

Erin Doherty reveals major update on relationship with Sinead Donnelly

33-year-old Erin Doherty had a great year in the industry. Playing forensic psychologist Briony Ariston in the smash-hit psychological drama Adolescence, Doherty earned widespread acclaim. She went on to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

She has also been in a happy relationship with NHS radiographer Sinead Donnelly for some months now. During her latest appearance on Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast, Doherty discussed how she and Donnelly initially tried to make things work from a distance. But it did not happen that way in the end.

“I’m such a romantic. I hate saying goodbye at the end of every day. I hated it. I’m so bad,” she said, “People say it’s like a cliche lesbian thing, where you immediately move in, so we held on as long as we could. But I was like, I really think I should move in now.”

She continued to explain, “I tried to make it as non-cliche as possible, but I just love her. So at the start of [last] year, I moved in with her, and it’s been the craziest year of my life.”

Moving in together quickly is a running joke in the lesbian community. This is what she referred to while calling her relationship a cliché.

In this podcast appearance, Doherty also revealed that she started dating Donnelly while living with her older sister in West Sussex. Donnelly lives in North London, and the two had to commute to see each other.

“We just came to a place where it was like, as much as I love getting on the trains and going to see her and having days in London, I also want to wake up next to you. It’s like a natural progression,” she explained.

Erin Doherty will next be seen on California Avenue, an upcoming BBC One television drama.
