Kate Winslet on Exploring Intimacy as a Teen: ‘I Certainly Was Curious’

While reflecting on her breakout role, Kate Winslet revealed a new detail about her private life. The Oscar-winning actress is currently on a promotional tour for her Christmas family drama, “Goodbye June.” During one interview, she shared her intimate experiences as a teenager.

Kate Winslet first gained recognition for her role in the 1994 drama “Heavenly Creatures.” Directed by Peter Jackson, the film followed Winslet and her co-star, Melanie Lynskey, as two teenage girls in an obsessive friendship. During her appearance on the “Team Deakins” podcast on December 24, the 50-year-old actress shared how her own experiences as a teen helped shape her on-screen character.

Winslet said, “I’ll share something I’ve never shared before. Some of my first intimate experiences as a young teen were actually with girls. I’d kissed a few girls, and I’d kissed a few boys, but I wasn’t particularly evolved in either direction. At that stage in my life, I certainly was curious, and I think there was something about the really intense connection that those two women had that I profoundly understood.”

The “Avatar: Fire and Ash” star added that she was immediately drawn into the world that the characters lived in. She explained how that world ultimately became deeply “damaging” for both of them and exposed their profound “insecurities and vulnerabilities.”

“Heavenly Creatures,” based on the infamous Parker-Hulme murder case, was the feature film debut for both Winslet and Lynskey. Upon its debut at the Venice Film Festival, it won the Silver Lion. It was one of the most well-received movies of the year and even earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay in 1995.

Kate Winslet then starred in period dramas like “Sense and Sensibility,” “Jude,” and “Hamlet.” She rose to international recognition in 1997 after starring as Rose DeWitt Bukater opposite Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack in James Cameron’s epic historical romance, “Titanic.”
