Nearly two decades after its release, Kate Winslet says fans still flock to her 2006 rom-com The Holiday as a beloved seasonal tradition. Winslet was on The View on Wednesday with co-stars Toni Collette and Andrea Riseborough to promote her new film Goodbye June. She also talked about why the Nancy Meyers-directed movie continues to charm audiences. Even with blockbuster hits like Titanic under her belt, it’s The Holiday that keeps viewers coming back every December.
Kate Winslet says ‘mothers and daughters’ come up to tell her that they still watch The Holiday
Kate Winslet told Whoopi Goldberg and the View team that The Holiday has become a beloved annual ritual for fans. She shared that around this time of year, moms and daughters often approach her, saying they have a yearly girls’ night where they watch the movie together. Winslet noted that there’s something really heartwarming about friends and family gathering year after year to enjoy the film.
“At this time of year…mothers and daughters come up to me and say… ‘At this time of year, we have our girls’ night, and we sit down and watch The Holiday. There’s something very beautiful about this sort of ritual that lots of mothers and daughters and groups of girlfriends seem to experience, to watch The Holiday,” she said.
Nancy Meyers wrote, produced, and directed the rom-com The Holiday, with Kate Winslet playing Iris, an Englishwoman who trades homes with Amanda (Cameron Diaz) in L.A. to evade holiday heartbreak. Iris crosses paths with Jack Black’s Miles, while Amanda navigates the English countryside, and sparks fly with Jude Law’s Graham. The movie’s magic comes from its mix of cross-cultural laughs, heartfelt romance, and cozy festive elements. This is why fans keep replaying the movie season after season.
On The View, Winslet also spilled about her new project Goodbye June, which she not only stars in but also directs. The film follows four grown siblings dealing with family drama as they face their mother’s declining health over the holidays. Winset also claims that the movie draws from her own experiences with loss.
Goodbye June is set to premiere on Netflix on Friday, with a U.K. release scheduled for Christmas Eve.
