Matthew McConaughey Missed His 35th Birthday Party For This Reason

In a recent conversation on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Matthew McConaughey revealed that he missed his 35th birthday party because he was busy getting high. At the time, he thought it was a much better idea to sit in the truck, listening to and crying over one of Janet Jackson’s songs. However, after his own plans, he did return to the party, only to realize that everyone had already left. He also further revealed what inspired him to quit smoking.

McConaughey shared an experience about missing his 35th birthday in his new book, Poems & Prayers, which he discussed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! He revealed that he chose to get high instead of attending his birthday party. “And this was right about the time when the old Mexican dirt weed that you would just kind of pull a toke off a joint, laugh, giggle, get the munchies, then maybe go hook up with somebody, turned into a little hydroponic. A little stronger, right?” he said.

He revealed that he smoked the weed, sat in his vehicle, and sobbed over a Janet Jackson song on repeat. “Because I decided that what was more important than going into my birthday was to sit in my truck and listen to Janet Jackson’s ‘That’s the Way Love Goes’ 34 freaking times in a row and cry and think it was the most beautiful, wonderful song,” he added. He shared that by the time he returned to the party, everyone had left.

In the book, the actor had earlier mentioned that the joint he used to take turned into “a paralysis puff of f***ing analysis.” He became so high that he would stare at a single piece of wood in his ceiling rafters, wondering if it was trying to tell him something important, when clearly, it wasn’t.

McConaughey further noted that it was Jackson’s song on repeat that inspired him to give up smoking. “If every dance step matters too much, we never find our rhythm. If we give every note too much credit, we’ll never hear the song. That’s why I quit smoking,” he explained (via US Weekly).
