Brendan Fraser Didn’t Know This Top Actor Prior to The Mummy Returns

Brendan Fraser may have been involved in different Hollywood projects since 1991. However, the 57-year-old actor had no idea that one of his costars from his 2001 action thriller, The Mummy Returns, was famous for a different reason. Fans may be startled to learn that the actor who Fraser didn’t know about in 2001, is one of the highest-paid Hollywood stars today.

Brendan Fraser confesses to not knowing this Hollywood star before The Mummy Returns

Fraser was almost a decade old in his Hollywood career when he shot for The Mummy Returns. However, the Gods And Monsters actor admitted that he didn’t know Dwayne Johnson in the latest edition of Variety’s Actors on Actors.

Fraser mentioned that he felt quite positive about Johnson’s selection for The Scorpion King’s role in the movie. However, he didn’t have the slightest idea about his massive stature as The Rock in the WWE community.

“You were always the right guy for the job [playing Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns]. When I was told that you were a possibility for it. Forgive me, but I didn’t know you from the wrestling world,” Fraser admitted. “And when I was shown [your details], I said, ‘That is perfect. That is inspired casting. That’s fantastic. We’d be lucky to get the guy.'”

Fraser shouldn’t be blamed for not knowing about Johnson especially since The Mummy Returns was the WWE star’s first Hollywood venture. Fast forward to 2025, and The Rock is easily one of the most popular Hollywood stars across the world, making millions from each movie.

The Mummy Returns received largely mixed reviews from critics but was a massive commercial success and was the seventh-highest-grossing movie of 2001.
