Update 10/9/2026: An earlier version of this article stated that Alfonso Cuarón was the one working on a new horror movie. Mandatory has since learned that is inaccurate and that Alfonso’s son Jonás is the one working on the project.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuarón‘s son, Jonás Cuarón, has announced that he’s directing a new horror movie. The update comes from the 31st Busan International Film Festival in South Korea.
Details about the project have not yet been revealed, and there’s no release date timeline given for the untitled movie as of yet. Jonás Cuarón has previously directed movies such as 2007’s Año uña, 2015’s Desierto, and 2023’s Chupa. Additionally, his latest film, Campéon Gabacho, was shown at South by Southwest earlier this year.
Jonás co-wrote the screenplay to 2013’s Gravity with his father. That movie, which stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards; while it didn’t win, Alfonso did take home the Best Director Oscar, among other accolades.
What else has Alfonso Cuarón besides Harry Potter and Gravity?
Alfonso Cuarón has earned accolades for numerous projects in his career. His first major film was Sólo con tu pareja, a romantic comedy, released in 1991. He then made a fantasy film called A Little Princess in 1995. His 1998 romantic drama Great Expectations featured notable names such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Ethan Hawke, and Anne Bancroft.
Cuarón initially gained attention at the Oscars with his coming-of-age movie Y tu mamá también. At the 2002 Academy Awards event, it was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. The filmmaker scored another nomination for his action thriller Children of Men, led by Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, and Michael Caine, among others. The movie is still considered a modern masterpiece, with a 92% Tomatometer score and an 85% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Five years later, the 64-year-old’s another acclaimed drama, Roma, won two Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Cinematography. The ensemble cast included Yalitza Aparicio, Marina de Tavira, and Carlos Peralta, among others.
