Almost a year after their first romantic linkup, there’s hardly any time when Andrew Garfield talks about his girlfriend, Monica Barbaro, except when it is about her acting. Only recently has the on-screen Amazing Spider-Man shared rare praise for his GF and Artificial co-star.
The couple has kept their relationship private since they were first linked, but Garfield recently commented on Barbaro’s work in Artificial. He described her performance as “transformational” and praised her dedication to playing former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati.
“I think Monica is a supremely talented actor,” Garfield said via People. “I think what she did as Joan Baez [in 2024’s A Complete Unknown] — what she accessed in that project — is nothing short of transformational, extraordinary and deeply mysterious.”
Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming biographical comedy-drama recently released its first teaser. Garfield plays OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman during his dramatic five-day removal and reinstatement in November 2023. Barbaro’s character becomes part of the story surrounding the company’s internal turmoil, alongside Yura Borisov and Mark Rylance.
Why are Andrew Garfield’s comments about Monica Barbaro so rare
For the most part, Andrew Garfield has generally avoided discussing his romantic relationships publicly. The 43-year-old has previously spoken about keeping his private life separate from his career. According to him, he wants to protect personal relationships from the pressure and attention that can come with being famous.
“I think she is truly incredible. I could wax lyrical more, but I’ll leave it there,” Garfield said right after his short and rare praise for his partner.
That approach has continued with Barbaro. The two have been spotted together at Wimbledon and during outings in London, but neither has made their relationship a major subject on social media or red carpets.
Garfield’s decision to publicly praise her performance therefore stands out, particularly because his comments focus on Barbaro’s work rather than their relationship. Working together on Artificial gave them an opportunity to share the screen as they tackled a story about one of the most closely watched moments in the recent history of the technology industry.
Artificial is scheduled to premiere at the New York Film Festival before receiving a theatrical release in December 2026.
