Beloved Jake Gyllenhaal & Seth Rogen Movie Returns to Theaters for Its 25th Anniversary

One of Seth Rogen and Jake Gyllenhaal‘s most celebrated films is headed back to theaters. The movie will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

As revealed by Fathom Entertainment, Donnie Darko will be heading back to the big screen, fully restored in 4K. These screenings will feature an exclusive introduction from writer/director Richard Kelly as well, who will highlight the place the film has held in popular culture since its release.

Donnie Darko’s enduring appeal and star-studded cast

First released in 2001, the film will be heading back to theaters this year from October 2 to October 4. The release dates are no coincidence either, as October 2nd is often known as Donnie Darko Day. It is a reference to the date when the strange occurrences of the film begin to occur in-universe.

The film follows the titular character, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, as he navigates his life through strange occurrences that seem to be governed by forces beyond his explanation. Additionally, he is haunted by Frank, a mysterious, almost supernatural, giant rabbit that only Darko himself can see.

As per the official announcement, Fathom Entertainment’s Vice President of Marketing, Shannah Miller, reflected on the slow, eventual success of Donnie Darko, saying, “This was not a film that exploded overnight – it found its audience slowly, and then never let go.”

Apart from Gyllenhaal, the film has a star-studded cast. It features Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Noah Wyle, Patrick Swayze, and Seth Rogen in key roles.

Weeks ago, it was announced that Richard Kelly had already penned a Donnie Darko sequel, which was currently in the process of being edited. It will be published by Range Literary Publishing. The book is estimated to be 600 pages long, down from Kelly’s original manuscript, which was 800 pages. The book is titled The Philosophy of Time Travel taking place in 1988, right after the events of the first film. It is not yet known how the story will continue, given that Donnie Darko died at the end of his story.

Tickets are currently on sale for the Donnie Darko re-release.
