The upcoming biopic follows the untold and inspiring story of one of the most important mountain climbers in history, who, alongside Edmund Hillary, became the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
Tom Hiddleston & Genden Phuntsok lead Tenzing as Edmund Hillary & Tenzing Norgay
Tenzing is based on the true story of Tenzing Norgay, who is portrayed by Genden Phuntsok. The movie also features Tom Hiddleston as Sir Edmund Hillary. Norgay and Hillary were the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953.
Norgay was born in the Indo-Tibetan landscape. As a teenager, he ran away to Darjeeling, India. After working as a mountain guide, the climber attempted to summit Mount Everest six times before finally reaching the top in 1953.
Meanwhile, Hillary was born in New Zealand and served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force during World War II. His passion for mountain climbing developed on local peaks, leading him to join the 1951 Everest reconnaissance expedition.
The two climbers first met during a British expedition led by Sir John Hunt, played by Dafoe. After failing the first attempt, the pair were selected again for a second climb, which was successful.
Tenzing is helmed by Jennifer Peedom. It also stars Caitríona Balfe, Lobsang Tenzin Meindrukbhuk, and Tenzin Jigmey.
Tenzing will have its world premiere at the 53rd Telluride Film Festival, which runs from September 4 to 7, 2026. It will again be screened at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which runs from September 10 to September 20. After screening at the two film festivals, the movie will premiere at the Zurich Film Festival, which will take place from September 24 to October 4, 2026.
The biopic will have its theatrical run in the US beginning October 9, 2026, followed by an Apple TV release on October 16.
