The first reviews for Bucking Fastard are in. They shed light on Kate and Rooney Mara‘s enigmatic performances in the new film. The feature-length drama comes from director Werner Herzog and premiered at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival this week. The film follows two inseparable sisters, played by Kate and Rooney Mara, who speak in unison and share the same dream of loving the same man.
At the time of writing, the film has very few reviews, but all point to one common thread. Every review praises the performances by the leading sisters, though most agree that the film itself is uneven.
“What cannot be faulted is how fully the Mara Sisters commit to the psychological and physical symbiosis of their precisely synced characters,” reads The Hollywood Reporter’s review. Similarly, Variety‘s review also praises the Mara sisters and their performance, but also points out the flaws of the uneven script and Herzog’s direction.
Next Best Picture’s review paints a similar picture, stating, “Even as the story meanders, you’re still invested because of them, and they often bring you back in as they’re off on some other bizarre conquest.”
What else do we know about Bucking Fastard with Rooney Mara?
Herzog has been developing Bucking Fastard for many years, inspired by the British identical twin sisters Freda and Greta Chaplin. The real-life duo gained notoriety in the 1980s by having a restraining order put on them. Likewise, the film also deals with the sisters getting embroiled in a trial after their common lover, Gareth Mulroney, files for a restraining order on the grounds of harassment.
It is the first feature film that the Maras appeared in together. Bucking Fastard also marks Herzog’s 21st film. The celebrated filmmaker previously helmed Family Romance, LLC, Ghost Elephants, and other projects. He has also starred in several films and TV shows himself. Besides the Mara sisters, the film also stars Orlando Bloom and Domhnall Gleeson.
Bucking Fastard currently doesn’t have a release date for a theatrical rollout.
