Sandra Bullock on How Partner Bryan Randall’s Death Changed Her Outlook on Life

Sandra Bullock has opened up about how Bryan Randall’s death changed the way she sees life. Caring for her longtime partner also made her realize she had not been taking care of herself.

The 62-year-old actress discussed the experience during an August 17 appearance on SiriusXM’s SmartLess podcast. She was there to promote Practical Magic 2, her first movie since 2022’s The Lost City.

Bullock said she now feels a deep sense of happiness she didn’t have before, while also acknowledging that her own health had taken a back seat while caring for Randall.

She said, “I didn’t take care of myself then, but I do take care of myself now. My sister, for my birthday, gave me this beautiful pewter box, and it said ‘Leonardo da Vinci,’ a quote by him at like 87; he says, ‘I’m still learning’. I went, ‘Oh.’ That’s why, I think, I have such happiness in my chest.”

What happened to Sandra Bullock’s partner Bryan Randall?

Bryan Randall died at 57 in August 2023 after a private three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He had asked Bullock not to publicly discuss his diagnosis, which she said left her feeling isolated during the difficult period.

Bullock also recalled becoming concerned about her own health after having COVID-19. She continued handling responsibilities at home while nurses cared for Randall, including preparing food.

Eventually, she visited a doctor after feeling that something was wrong. The reassuring results became a turning point and gave her what she called a “new lease on life.”

She added, “Other things can frustrate me, things can upset me, I get pissed off, I get petty, but there’s a — I’m so happy, and I feel like I’m a kid for the first time in my life as I’m seeing things that I’ve seen a million times before.”

In her comeback film Practical Magic 2, she reprises her role as Sally Owens alongside Nicole Kidman, who also returns as Gillian. This sequel to the 1998 fantasy movie hits theaters on September 11.
