‘Two Shining Talents’: Ice Princess Director Honors Late Stars After Hayden Panettiere’s Death

Hollywood is mourning the tragic loss of Nashville star Hayden Panettiere, who passed away Sunday. Actors, friends, and co-stars have shared tributes, while the Ice Princess director has remembered Panettiere alongside Gossip Girl star Michelle Trachtenberg, who both appeared in his 2005 film.

Director Tim Fywell penned a heartfelt statement to both actors following the death of Panettiere, remembering their work in his beloved ice-skating film in 2005, Variety reports. The news of Panettiere’s passing has brought the 2005 Disney movie to trending.

The film follows Casey Carlyle (Trachtenberg), a teenager who turns down Harvard to pursue her dream of achieving a professional career in figure skating. Along the way, she meets Gen Harwood (Panettiere), a talented skater who becomes an important part of her journey. The film also starred Joan Cusack and Kim Cattrall.

Ice Princess director Tim Fywell looks back on Hayden Panettiere’s ‘vibrant talent’

Fywell remembered Panettiere as a “brave, sparky, dedicated young actress” who brought energy to the sets with her “vibrant talent.”

“Michelle Trachtenberg, Hayden’s co-star in the movie Ice Princess, and she were an amazing pair,” Fywell told Variety. The British director described Panettiere and Trachtenberg as having very different personalities on set. He summarized Trachtenberg as “kooky, fun,” praising her infectious laugh and “brilliant sad-funny comic timing.”

On the other hand, he recalled Panettiere was “plucky and determined and a perfectionist.” According to Fywell, the actress spent hours practicing and perfecting her skating and her performance.

The director recalled the production was tough and technically demanding, mentioning it was his first Hollywood feature film. Still, he said both actresses were a joy to work with during their young days. Fywell concluded his sweet tribute by looking back on the two young stars at a simpler time.

“I remember them both with huge affection,” Fywell said. “Two shining talents, gone far too soon.”

Panettiere, who would have turned 37 this Friday, died at 36, while Trachtenberg passed away in February 2025 at 39.
