EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert is a follow-up to Luhrmann’s 2022 biopic Elvis. Luhrmann’s new Elvis movie is a concert documentary film, unlike the first. It features newly restored archival footage of Elvis Presley from his 1970’s Las Vegas residency.
Director Luhrmann and his team combined the documentary with rare 16mm footage from Elvis on Tour, never-before-seen 8mm home movies from the Graceland archives, and newly rediscovered audio recordings in which Presley reflects on his life and career.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where early audience members reportedly danced along in their seats. That momentum carried into its theatrical run, where it set a record for the biggest opening weekend ever for a documentary in IMAX.
Critics also praised the movie for its electrifying, joyous, and visually stunning presentation. At the time of writing, EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert has a 97% score from 118 critic reviews, along with more than a thousand verified audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie also established its success at the box office. According to The Numbers, EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert earned $23.5 million, with a production budget of $10-$11 million, and was distributed in the United States by NEON and in Canada by Elevation Pictures.
