The Sopranos creator David Chase is developing a new film alongside a connected HBO series. The seven-time Emmy Award recipient was also the head writer and executive producer of the influential television series.
What new movie is The Sopranos creator David Chase directing?
David Chase is currently developing and will be directing a new film that juxtaposes the CIA’s efforts to weaponize LSD with the successful rollout of the polio vaccine, per TheWrap. The untitled film will be set in the 1950s and will follow a family connected to both worlds. It’s reportedly inspired by one of Chase’s friends and marks his return to the director’s chair for the first time since the 2012 James Gandolfini film Not Fade Away.
The film comes alongside The Sopranos creator’s previously announced HBO limited series on the agency’s MKUltra program. The upcoming series is based on historian John Lisle’s Project Mind Control: Sidney Gottlieb, the CIA, and the Tragedy of MKUltra. Both projects stem from his own experiences with psychedelics.
Speaking at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, David Chase said, “There’s so much to the whole MKUltra story, so many wild people. I don’t mean people high on LSD — I mean the scientists themselves. It doesn’t stop. I’m trying to pare it down to what the story should be, because every time another book comes out, or another paragraph, I think, ‘Well, that’s got to be in it too!'”

“I took LSD when I was younger, and I never forgot it,” Chase added. “I’d say it was a life-changing experience, although I couldn’t tell you exactly how. This is going to sound stupid, but at age 18 or 19, I just became convinced there were other levels of existence— that this isn’t all there is.”
A release date has yet to be announced for either project.
