Following Jason Segel’s recent comments proposing a Forgetting Sarah Marshall sequel, another Kristen Bell movie deserving a sequel is worth consideration. Nearly a decade after its Christmas sequel, STX Entertainment’s Bad Moms franchise is due for another movie with Bell, Kathryn Hahn, and Mila Kunis.
Unlike the 2008 romantic comedy film, the Bad Moms franchise has more room to grow. A Forgetting Sarah Marshall sequel would ruin that film’s ending. It is already considered a great breakup comedy that ended on a satisfying conclusion, which provided Segel’s character Peter with the emotional closure he needed. If the potential sequel ends up bringing Sarah back into Peter’s life, his personal growth from the first movie would have been pointless.
Why Kristen Bell’s Bad Moms should get another sequel
Instead of Forgetting Sarah Marshall 2, I believe another Bad Moms movie would be a better fit for Bell. Before the pandemic, the studio was actually already developing a Bad Moms 3 with acclaimed stars Susan Sarandon, Christine Baranski, and Cheryl Hines, who played the main trio’s mothers. However, the project was ultimately canceled.
Now that enough time has passed, there are many directions the next sequel’s story could go. The next story could tackle modern parenting, featuring Bell, Hahn, and Kunis’ characters dealing with their teenage children or their kids leaving home for college. It would be interesting to see their characters in the next phase of motherhood, especially with the main trio’s dynamic chemistry on-screen.
Following Hahn’s back-to-back success with Agatha All Along and The Studio, I think this would also be the right time for the studio to take advantage of the Golden Globe nominee’s current career resurgence. Hahn’s post-Marvel return in a potential Bad Moms 3 would definitely garner more attention for the R-rated franchise compared to previous installments.
Even though A Bad Moms Christmas didn’t surpass the first movie’s box office results, making a third film would still be reasonable for the studio since it’s a low-budget franchise. With an A-list cast and proven story formula, I’m convinced that revisiting the Bad Moms franchise is worth another shot.
