Netflix’s Enola Holmes has effectively solved Sherlock Holmes‘ biggest problem. The beloved fictional detective is one of the most adapted literary characters in film and TV history. Before Henry Cavill‘s new take on the detective, many actors famously portrayed Holmes, including Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch. However, Cavill’s fresh take on the popular character is the most distinct out of all of the character’s other live-action adaptations.
Why Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes works in the Enola Holmes movies
Cavill’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes works because his version doesn’t overshadow Millie Bobby Brown’s titular Enola Holmes. Unlike previous versions, Cavill’s Sherlock acts as a mentor to Enola and a supporting character in the story. This fresh take on the popular literary character allows Cavill’s version to have an emotional connection to his sister as opposed to previous versions where the character was often portrayed as cold and apathetic to others. Because of this, the audience is able to view the character in a different light.
Even though Cavill’s version of Sherlock Holmes isn’t a traditional adaptation of the fictional detective, it has been well-received by many fans. Giving the character warmth and losing his usual egoistic trait was the key to the incredible sibling chemistry between Cavill’s Sherlock and Brown’s Enola, which has been one of the franchise’s major highlights since the first installment. Although some Sherlock fans aren’t fond of Cavill’s portrayal since he doesn’t fit the character’s traditional physique, I believe that the Man of Steel star’s muscular build helped showcase his older brother energy. Watching their playful sibling rivalry and hilarious intellectual banter is absolutely a breath of fresh air for audiences who are used to seeing the genius detective’s cynical antics in previous adaptations.
The upcoming Enola Holmes 3 movie will once again feature a different side of Cavill’s Sherlock, because this time Enola’s mission will revolve around his kidnapping. It will be interesting to see how his character will guide Enola through the clues he has left for her.
