1997’s fan-favorite romantic comedy film My Best Friend’s Wedding has found a new streaming home this month. As of today, one of Julia Roberts‘ most iconic movies ever is now officially available to stream on Netflix.
What do we know about Julia Roberts’ My Best Friend’s Wedding movie?
My Best Friend’s Wedding was directed by P.J. Hogan, with Ronald Bass writing the screenplay. In the 1997 movie, Roberts played a woman who realizes that she’s in love with her long-time friend after finding out that he’s getting married. During its theatrical run, the film became a massive box office success worldwide, grossing over $299 million against a budget of around $38 million.
“Childhood friends Julianne Potter and Michael O’Neal had a deal to marry each other if they were still single by age 28. Now, four days before her 28th birthday, O’Neil announces that he’s marrying a gorgeous 20-year-old named Kimberly. Suddenly realizing that she’s actually in love with him, Julianne vows to stop the wedding at all costs. However, when she is appointed maid of honor, things get even more complex,” reads the official synopsis.
My Best Friend’s Wedding also starred Dermot Mulroney as Michael O’Neal, Cameron Diaz as Kimmy Wallace, Rupert Everett as George Downes, Rachel Griffiths as Samantha Newhouse, Carrie Preston as Amanda Newhouse, and more. The film currently has a 75% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. For her leading performance, Robert earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress – Musical or Comedy.
At the moment, Sony Pictures is currently developing a sequel to the 1997 film, with Past Lives director Celine Song attached to write the script. Last year, it was revealed that the studio was planning to bring back Roberts and Mulroney’s characters for the sequel.
