We’ve all been told at some point in our lives that we ought to boost our confidence in order to present ourselves to the society in a better way. However, do we really know what does confident mean? It seems that this quality is quite unattainable to many, but we don’t know why. What does it take to gain self-confidence and improve your life? Well, we’re about to find out as we closely analyze confidence bit by bit. See if you agree with us.

What Is Confidence?

Most of the time, when we speak of confidence, we actually mean self-confidence. The word itself comes from the Latin “confidere” and means having complete trust in someone. That is why the verb “to confide” means to tell someone about something expecting that they will not betray your trust.” That’s also where “confidential” comes from, but enough with the etymology. So, self-confidence means that you have complete faith in yourself, that you believe you’re a capable person and, most important of all, that you won’t let yourself down. Why is this the most important part? Well, it’s because other people are bound to let you down at some point – that’s inevitable. It’s much more devastating to your morale when you disappoint yourself because you suffer on two front – as the one who disappoints and as the one who is disappointed.

Why Is Confidence Important?

Well, self-confidence is one of those qualities we often notice but can’t exactly pinpoint. It radiates through you and emphasizes your every other virtue you possess. Every idea you have sounds a lot better if you present it using self-confidence. So, as you can see, this quality is super important in a professional environment. A job interview is a good example of that. Yes, you can have an amazing portfolio that showcases all your skills and expertise, but if you start questioning yourself during the interview, your employer will see it as a huge weakness. Of course, this also works in your personal life. If you’re flirting with a girl, you need to convince her that you’re the right man for her. It’s not about what you say, but how you say it. Most girls don’t even remember (though they claim they do) what was the first thing you said to them. They certainly remember, though, what kind of vibe you were giving off.

How to Improve Self-Confidence?

By now, you’ve realized that confidence is, in a way, a catalyst that brings all your other qualities to light, so you understand why it’s important to have it. Now, when it comes to boosting your self-confidence, the only good advice that anyone can give you is – practice. Everything gets better with practice and that’s a fact. You can theorize as much as you want about anything you want, but your ultimate test with be the practical one. So, in order to improve your confidence, you need to go out there and practice it every day. Approach a girl in the club and show her your best self, no matter how boastful you sound to yourself. You’ll refine that in time. You start off with something ludicrous, ridiculous and overly confident and, as time goes by, you’ll learn to modify that discourse so that it only radiates confidence, nothing else. It’s like chiseling a beautiful statue out of a huge, rugged rock. It takes time, but you’ll get there eventually.

So, the next time someone asks you – what does confident mean? – you won’t need to use your words. You’ll be able to show them by example. Do you have any stories about how self-confidence has helped you in a situation? Share them with us in the comment section below.
