McDonald’s Launches MIDI-Enabled Placemats

McDonald’s in Holland has given budding producers the launchpad, or rather, the placemat to test their production skills.

In a new marketing move, Maccas stores have launched a rollout of a Bluetooth placemat called McTrax, given out with meal orders – that doubles as a functioning MIDI controller.

Customers simply connect their phone to the Bluetooth of the mat, and can begin making music – either listening back through headphones or their phone’s speakers. Using the McTrax app, users can loop audio, access synth samples and other effects, as well as record their own voice.

“The paper of the placemat is what makes this technique so innovative,” creators TBWA\Nekobo said in a statement. “The phone merely acts as the speaker and screen, which is easily connected to the placemat via Bluetooth, making sure you can hear the music on your speakers.”

The placemat is fitted with a micro-width circuit board with 26 touch-points and digitally conductive ink, in order to link with your smartphone.

At this stage, there is no scheduled roll-out for Australia or any other countries for that matter – but we can live in hope.
