Apple CEO Tim Cook Asks: “Why Would Anyone Buy a PC?”

Apple CEO Tim Cook believes that Apple products are reducing the need for PCs, so much so that he has questioned why someone would purchase a non-Apple desktop when the likes of the iPad Pro and iPhone 6S exist.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Cook claimed that the upcoming launch of the new iPad (which is available to pre-order right now before it becomes available later in the week) will cause many to abandon PCs altogether. “I think if you’re looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one?”, he asked, adding: “Yes, the iPad Pro is a replacement for a notebook or a desktop for many, many people. They will start using it and conclude they no longer need to use anything else, other than their phones.”

Cook noted how creatives will be the first to give up on the PC, claiming: “If you sketch then it’s unbelievable… you don’t want to use a pad anymore.”

Apple execs are known for making hyperbolic statements in regards to their products, and even though the iPad Pro certainly looks impressive (though its continued adoption of a modified version of iOS still leaves something to be desired), it’s unlikely that many will be giving up their desktop PC in favor of the supersized tablet.

While the new iPad is capable of performing many of the tasks users would typically perform on their PC, it inevitably doesn’t boast the same kind of processing and GPU power many require for PC-specific tasks such as gaming. By all accounts it’s shaping up to be a great alternative to the notebook, but Apple have still yet to create a handheld device that can reasonably compete with a PC across the board, mainly because it isn’t technologically possible for them to do so yet.
