NYIAS 2015: 2015 BMW 2 Series Convertible Review

Leading up to NYIAS 2015, BMW introduced a couple new 2015 models out in Austin at the Circuit of the Americas – the X6 M and the 2 Series Convertible.

Obviously, those are two very different vehicles — and we already kicked around the upside of the X6 M on these pages. That’s a powerful, $100K+ vehicle angled at a very specific buyer. The 2 Series Convertible on display on the floor at NYIAS 2015 is intended for a broader audience — including buyers just entering the luxury class on the lookout for their first BMW.

Starting around $37,000, the 2015 2 Series offers a twin turbo inline four cylinder engine linked to an eight speed automatic transmission with optional use of paddle shifters. With just those four cylinders, that BMW engineering will still put out 240 horsepower and an mpg rating of 32 highway Driver can also opt for comfort or performance with a five mode driving setting selection.

On the features side, you get power everything, HD/FM/AM/Satellite, heated/cooled seats, engine start/stop, rain-sensing wipers, iDrive infotainment system, BMW Teleservice, ABS, airbags, everywhere, etc. I shouldn’t have to go over most of that with automotive readers. This is a BMW. They don’t often skimp on the candy.

The driving experience has all of the essential BMW trappings. The 2 Series Convertible is smooth and precise. It’s quick when it needs to be and lays the power in easily and effortlessly when ready to cruise on the open road. It doesn’t have the brutality or voice of an M3 or M4; you have to pay for such hallmarks if you want them.

The 2 Series is well-balanced, limiting both understeer and oversteer to minimums. Whether on the highway or slipping through urban traffic, the driver will find little to complain about or yearn for behind the wheel of this convertible.

And, the top will go down while the car is in motion — under 30 mph.

So, all totaled, the 2 Series Convertible is essentially an upgraded trim for the automaker’s introductory purchase level. It’s intended not just for drivers who would like a little Bavarian sunshine on the back of their necks, but for buyers looking for an entry level BMW with that little extra visual and sensory appeal.

And, the car works on that level perfectly. But, BMW faces competition of its own making from Acura, Lexus and other would-be competitors in this marketplace and price range. To fight off the appeal of that German-made logo, other manufacturers on the hunt here at the New York International Auto Show max out performance technology and in-car comfort and infotainment features at lower price points — bringing similarly sized options in around for thousands of dollars cheaper.

Because of those lower priced challengers, the 2 Series Convertible is every bit an outstanding option as an entry-level BMW at $37K+. But, you can get just as much car, comfort and performance for thousands less in the class. It’s up to you to decide how much that iconic badge is worth to you.
