Travel: Amazing Bridges of Paddington – Just Because

I think this might be the first time I wrote up a quick travel post with the sole purpose of showing off something that struck me as spectacular. What you’ll see here aren’t major travel or tourism destinations. But, they’re worth seeing if you’re lucky enough to be on the scene at the right time.

A recent perspire to London sent me along to visit the brand new The Paddington Trail (above) took me through the growing, modernizing neighborhood growing around the massive train station that gave the children’s story bear his name.

Along the canals near the station, new business and residential developments needed to get along with the house boats already residing there. So, they need to build moveable foot bridges — essential draw bridges that would allow pedestrian traffic most of the time while being fully able to move out of the way for boat traffic.

You can picture such a bridge. Simple. Up and down. Maybe a break in the middle. But, you’d be very wrong.

I give you videos demonstrating the Heatherwick’s Rolling Bridge and the Paddington Fan Bridge at Merchant Square. Enjoy.

Oh, and the videos feature geese, too. They’re not as interesting.
