Incredible Thunderstorm Photograph Wins National Geographic Photo Contest

This jaw-dropping image of a low precipitation supercell thunderstorm, taken by Marko Korošec, has won National Geographic’s Photo Contest 2014.

The annual photography competition was host to some truly awe-inspiring images taken from around the world, though this snapshot came out on top with the panel of judges.

Speaking of the photograph, Korošec said: “While on storm chasing expeditions in Tornado Alley in the U.S. I have encountered many photogenic supercell storms. This photograph was taken while we were approaching a storm near Julesburg, Colorado, on May 28, 2013.

“The storm was tornado warned for more than one hour, but it stayed an LP [low precipitation] storm through all its cycles and never produced a tornado, just occasional brief funnels, large hail, and some rain.”

Though Korošec won first place in the contest, which has a grand prize of an 8-day National Geographic expedition to Alaska for two, the runners-up also displayed some suitably impressive photos, such as this third place entry from  Marc Henauer, taken in Austria’s Green Lake (Grüner See).

This year’s Viewer’s Choice award went to James Eimmerman, who entered the below image, titled ‘Among the Giants’, into the competition. It depicts a young girl standing in front of a towering tree in the Sequoia National Forest.
