Lady Gaga‘s new single, “Judas,” leaked just ahead of the Catholics’ Holy Week. What a coincidence! Courtesy of E! Online:
Lady Gaga does it again!
This time, it’s not so much over her wardrobe, but her latest single “Judas” that’s got people talking. And when we say people, we mean the people of God.
An early internet leak of the song caused Team Gaga to rush release the single yesterday, and it didn’t take long for religious groups to get riled up.
So what got their goat? Well, the song and video are told through the perspective of Mary Magdelene, and it goes a little something like this:
“In the most Biblical sense/ I am beyond repentance/ Fame hooker, prostitute wench, vomits her mind/ But in the cultural sense/ I just speak in future tense/ Judas kiss me if offensed/ Or wear ear condom next time…”
Her team’s creative director, Laurieann Gibson, who is religious herself, says they made sure to not offend anyone.“It went through several changes and late-night debates because at one point, there were two completely different views and I was like, ‘Listen, I don’t want lightning to strike me! I believe in the gospel and I’m not going there,'” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
“And it was amazing because to have that conversation about salvation, peace and the search for the truth in a room of non-believers and believers, to me, that was saying God is active in a big way. And the place that it came to is surreal. We don’t touch on things that we have no right touching upon, but the inspiration and the soul and idea that out of your oppression, your darkness, your Judas, you can come into the marvelous light. So it’s about the inspiration and to never give up… We’ve created a new Jerusalem.”
Keep in mind that Lady Gaga is revered for her originality, but she has a creative director to help her determine just how controversial to be. Pissing off the Catholic church is neither different nor difficult (all you have to do is be gay or on birth control), but at least when Madonna did it she had a decent melody behind her and lyrics that made a modicum of sense.
That said, it’s a shame that the song and video are in Mary Magdalene’s point of view instead of Jesus’, because I’d really love for Judas to kiss Lady Gaga. I heard that ended well for the other savior of Jerusalem.
