#XboxOrWeRiot Trends Following Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s Sony Exclusivity Deal

All is not right in the world of Call of Duty fans, as the announcement that Sony has signed an exclusivity deal with Activision in order to bring Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 DLC to the PS4 before the Xbox One has inspired the creation of the hashtag ‘#XboxOrWeRiot’ to trend.

The hashtag, which has promptly become one of the top trending topics in the US, was created by MLG streamer Grizzly, who bemoaned the series moving away from its exclusivity deal with Microsoft where the CoD eSports community has been cultivated, to Sony and the PS4.

Though it may seem like an overreaction, considering that many people earn their living from playing Call of Duty professionally, having the series switch from Xbox One to PS4 is a big deal in the eSports community. This change will mean that, if players want to remain ahead of the curve and have access to new maps before their rivals, they’ll have to adapt to a completely new control style.

The switch to PS4 has made many claim that they will cancel their pre-order of the upcoming game unless Sony’s deal with Activision is retracted but, considering the amount of money that has probably changed hands in this deal, that’s very unlikely to happen. In an ideal world we wouldn’t have to worry about shitty exclusivity deals on third-party games and we could all enjoy our games, download DLC and have access to the content that is locked away in console-specific deals, but this is the way the industry works now. None of us like it, but as long as there is money to be made, these irritating anti-consumers deals being struck between companies will never end.
