AMC Nears Straight-To-Series Orders For 3 New Dramas

Last Sunday, AMC’s Mad Men came to an end, marking the end of an era for the cable network. But AMC appears to be eager to move on with some aggressive programming decisions.

According to Deadline, AMC has three new dramas poised for potential straight-to-series orders. The new shows include Goliath, a project formerly setup at HBO by David Kajganich, which is based upon David R. Dow’s book, The Autobiography Of An Execution. The second series is Lodge 49, written by Jim Gavin and produced by Paul Giamatti & Dan Carey. Lodge 49 follows “A young knucklehead from Long Beach joins a dusty old fraternal lodge.”

The third series is an adaptation of Philipp Meyer’s novel, The Son; which explores “a multi-generational epic telling of the story of America’s birth as a superpower through the bloody rise and fall of one Texas oil empire.” Meyers is adapting The Son for television alongside Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy.

Straight-to-series orders on AMC usually mean shortened first seasons of six to ten episodes. So far, AMC has only committed to setting up writers’ rooms for all three series to work on scripts and outlines. But it is understood that a series pickup for all three shows is very likely to happen.

AMC recently ordered Into The Badlands, Humans, and The Night Manager straight-to-series, which may indicate a shift in the network’s programming schedule. Only one other drama pilot at AMC is currently awaiting pickup: the adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s cult comic book series, Preacher.
